Hey fools!
I first want to say thank you to all of you for supporting me and my upcoming debut show, “Farewell My Fool”. Many of of you either donated or shared my GoFundMe, saw an excerpt of the show this month, sent encouraging words, sent grants to apply for, or engaged in my content. In the past two months since launching this fundraiser, we’ve raised $2,465 out of $7,000! With these funds, I have been able to secure payment for my Director, Christian Warner, a powerhouse of a performer himself.
Creating and producing a show is an expensive endeavor. I have been seeking out grants and will continue to do so but, let me let ya’ll in on a little secret since not all of you reading this are in the dance field…. $7,000 is still not a lot of money to put on an evening length dance show. I know! I know… I didn’t want to write that either. It makes me feel terrible. Especially now that tariffs, inflation, and 47 is making life more expensive and uncertain than it needs to be. But if I wanted to aim for my real dreams I would’ve made a budget that a mediocre white male choreographer usually deals with (think in the range of six figures…millions…yeah…). I am a Black working class neurodivergent artist who is prone to burnout every six months (more on that later) doing their absolute best to put two ends together and make a show that will get you all to come together and experience theater in an entirely different way. My aim is for you to walk out that theater meeting someone new, ready to party, rebel, make good trouble, and feel seen. It’s immersive… literally! I know people use that word alot, but I mean it!
By hook or by crook this show is getting made because I need to tell this story and I am absolutely prepared to finish the show with a budget that is smaller than what I am asking for. I grew up with the phrase “If you don’t have what you need, use what you got”. But I’m wondering if my community can help me secure another $1,000 by the end of this week...
If I could land on around another $1,000 by the end of this week I could fund original music by a very dear and incredibly talented friend to compose original music for this show.
What do you think?
Can we do it?!
I know money is tight. There a million other ways to send support me if money is not an option. You can share this newsletter to your your rich friends ;), you can share and engage with my posts on Instagram and TikTok, you could share my Go Fund Me, you could get a ticket to the show, and you could sell that shit out which would allow me to put on another show!
Peace and stay safe out there, we need you,
JoyBoy
